The Kiss for 48,000 Euro

Alfred Eisenstaedt’s legendary V-J Day Kiss (starting price: 8,000 Euro) was worth the amount of 48,000 Euro to a collector, setting a new record price for this icon of photography, which depicts a sailor kissing a nurse on Times Square during the celebrations for the end of WWII in 1945. The nurse turned out to be Austrian born Greta Friedman, who only passed away in September this year, originally from Wiener Neustadt, who had emigrated to the US in 1938.

For 38,400 Euro, Hollywood legend James Dean, a cigarette in the corner of his mouth, took a walk on rainy Times Square. This meant the highest price ever paid for this classic shot taken by Dennis Stock in 1955, which had started at 2,800 Euro.

With a final bid of 24,000 Euro (starting price: 5,000 Euro) the famous raising of the US flag on Iwo Jima by Joe Rosenthal from 1945 stood out among the numerous further highlights of the Auction.

Robert Doisneau’s “Le baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville”
, Paris 1950, climbed from 7,000 Euro to an astonishing 19,200 Euro.

A nude study by František Drtikol, a pigment transfer print from 1914, was bought by a collector for 20,400 Euro (starting price: 14,000 Euro).
